Removing insulation, checking, and then reinstating it once inspection is done costs you more. Doing inspection without removing insulation and weather jackets lowers the inspection costing. NDT methods are used by professionals to detect CUI in such a way that entire industry gets benefit from it.
Experts use numerous methods to inspect corrosion under insulation. No single method is used by itself- several methods are used together for optimal output.
The widely accepted method to inspect for corrosion under insulation is used by experts i.e. to cut plugs in the insulation that can be removed to permit ultrasonic testing. Here we will discuss some common methods used by professionals to check for CUI with their pros and cons-
1. Visual inspection
The first and foremost method is visual inspection. It involves removal of insulation, checking the pipe surface condition, and replacing the faulty insulation. This method consumes more time and effort along with money. It involves two methods- complete removal of insulation and partial removal of insulation.
2. Real time radiography
It offers a view of a pipe’s outer diameter profile via insulation. The equipment has a radiation source and an image detector. This method offers fast analysis, digital data archiving, traceability, and real time digital imaging. There is less need for repeat exposures using real-time radiography equipment. However, it is a health and safety hazard and limited to small structures. There is lack of sharpness and limited resolution compared to film-based radiography.
Corrosion under insulation is a plague that non destructive testing contributes to mitigate. However, the numerous inspection methods have their own pros and cons. You can share what you think about these methods of inspecting CUI. For more details on non-destructive testing equipment, write to suppliers and manufacturers of the products.
