Geotechnical tests are performed by experienced engineers using geotechnical lab testing instruments, which are solely designed for performing these tests. The geo technical experts need to understand the characteristics like physical properties that exist underneath a work site. Geotechnical lab testing process includes a walk around of the surface conditions and one or more of distinct types of tests. In general, lab experts categorize geotechnical testing into 4 types-
- Test pits
- Trenching
- Boring
- In-Situ testing
Test pits- These are well fitted in your expectations. A pit is a deep hole dug either manually or with an excavator to reveal the sub-surface conditions to the depth decided by the person.
Trenching – It is just like the test pits except one thing, the pit is elongated over some distance to establish how the sub-surface conditions change over distinct parts of the site. You can use a range of soil samples to extract test samples including hand driven augers, shovels, split spoon samplers, and tube samplers.

Boring – Small diameter borings offer the opportunity to physically eliminate the rock or soil samples for testing. With borings, you can avail advantage to see the real materials, however for specific types of soil, the act of boring can affect the condition of soil and you may not get the accurate results from the soil samples. You won’t be able to get the idea about the conditions for building and supporting structures as it is unscientific and void of actionable data. Engineers generally take soil samples from above tests to a lab, which are later evaluated by experts.
In-Situ testing – In this testing method, there are penetration tests like standard penetration tests that can be penetrated through drilling process and various cone penetration tests.
Each test is meant for different situation. You must understand the distinct types of tests available and the benefits of every test.
